* The processing of proteins which in a patient with liver problems can cause the accumulation of these and the rest from reaching the brain affected greatly.
* Carbohydrates are converted to glycogen which would make a sick liver for increased carbohydrate intake to balance it with protein.
* Since the liver is involved in metabolism, a decrease or increase of protein, fat, carbohydrates, can affect the production of proteins and vitamins.

Recommendations
To obtain the exact diet as the disease or have liver impairment is important to have a medical assessment as misunderstandings can occur. Here are some recommendations that can be useful in general for patients with liver damage:

* Large amounts of carbohydrate foods, which should be the major source of calories in the diet.
* The recommended increase of carbohydrate and fat help in preserving the protein in the body and prevent degradation.
* Consumption of approximately 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. This does not include the protein from starches and vegetables. However, avoid too much protein because reduction can lead to malnutrition.
* Vitamin supplements, especially B vitamins
* Limit sodium intake (usually 1 to 2 grams per day) if you are retaining fluid.
